The remains of Focke-Wulf 190F-8 93182, a JG 5 fighter that was shot out of the sky by the RAF in Norway on February 9, 1945 has been recently acquired by the Collings Foundation and is intended to be restored to flying condition. The plane was excavated out of a hillside in Norway in 1983 for the Norwegian Defence Museum and the daunting restoration project has already passed through the hands of the Texas Air Museum and the White 1 Foundation prior to being taken on by the Collings Foundation which will reassemble the plane at their New Smyrna Beach, Florida facility.
The various systems and assemblies have been farmed out to specialists across the nation; presently the wings are being restored by American Aero Services in New Smyrna Beach, Florida, the fuselage is with GossHawk Unlimited in Casa Grande, Arizona, while the BMW 801 Engine is in the capable hands of Vintage V12s, Inc. in Tehachapi, California.
Once completed this plane will be one of only two Focke-Wulf Fw 190s in the world that are capable of flight, though the Collings Foundation has also acquired another Fw 190D-9, #210096 which was shot down in Germany on April 23, 1945 and recovered in 1989 which they have indicated they intend to restore sometime in the future as well.
