WarbirdsNews welcomes a new partner, MySkyCart.com. The company manufactures airline galley carts which you might not immediately associate with vintage military aviation, but they have a new line of products decorated with airline and vintage WWII nose art which are sure to intrigue many of our readers.

The SkyCart is designed and built for use as an airline galley cart, however the company found that it could serve many practical purposes on the ground, and stylishly too. It’s essentially a sturdy, multi-draw chest on wheels, but built for an airliner and decorated with a cool aviation theme. What true aviation aficionado wouldn’t enjoy having something like this in their home, office or garage? It’s incredibly useful, versatile and decorative, and you can customize it to your own specific needs.

MySkyCart.com’s owner, Dieter Canje, talked with us recently about how his company got involved with making warbird-themed versions of the SkyCart.

“We live in the Spruce Creek Fly-in [near Daytona Beach, FL] and the business is also based there. There are quite a few historic airplanes at the field. We have three P-51s, a few T-6s and occasionally get visits from other warbirds. New Smyrna Beach is nearby.

We have a number of different motifs which we put on SkyCarts for home or office use. When I was thinking about a cart for our local restaurant here, “The Downwind”, I thought a nose art theme would be very suitable for the patrons. Many of them have a an Air Force or Navy background. I looked through Gary M. Valant’s book “Vintage Aircraft Nose Art”, and selected a couple of pin-ups there, then had our graphic designers re-create them.

The idea is still very new and the decision making for more specific nose art will very much depend on how customers react to the two which we have out so far.

One interesting story is the background images for these carts. I could not find anything suitable in the stock photography market. But at the time we had a DC-3 visiting here, and I thought I might be able to take a photo of its skin and use this as background. When I got to the plane I was disappointed that it was painted all over. However, at second glance, it turned out the engine cowlings were bare metal. So, I took a few photos of this cowling and used one of them for the ‘authentic vintage aircraft skin’ background.”

Dieter Canje took the texture and details in his photograph of a worn and well loved DC-3 engine cowling and used it to create an authentic vintage aircraft skin look to the SkyCart trolleys. The results were highly effective!
