ABOVE AND BEYOND

PRESS RELEASE – Reel Stuff Aviation Resources is pleased to partner with the Jewish Community Center (JCC) on their 15th Annual Dayton Jewish Film Festival in bringing the documentary, “Above and Beyond,” to the Air Force Museum giant screen theater on Thursday, April 30th. Scheduled as one of ten features of the JCC’s three-week long festival, the film will be presented by its producer, Nancy Spielberg, sister of filmmaker Steven Spielberg. “Above and Beyond” chronicles the veteran American military pilots who covertly volunteered to fly and fight in Israel’s 1948 War of Independence and in so doing gave birth to what became the vaunted Israel Air Force. An audience Q&A session with Ms. Spielberg will follow the screening. Click HERE for our previous articles.

At the time it was nearing completion, “Above and Beyond” was the subject of Ron Kaplan’s Reel Stuff column in the November/December 2013 issue of Warbird Digest Magazine. Upon screening the film soon after its July 2014 release, Kaplan said, “‘Above and Beyond’ illustrates why I’ve always believed these unsung ‘malchaniks’- volunteers from abroad – rank among military aviation’s legendary Eagle Squadrons of Battle of Britain fame and the American Volunteer Group ‘Flying Tigers’. Some gave up their U.S. citizenship, and some gave their lives. Nancy Spielberg and director Roberta Grossman vividly tell the stranger-than-fiction story of these courageous and often colorful characters, and the role they played in shaping world history.”

While exploring options for Reel Stuff to bring Spielberg and her film to the Air Force Museum Theatre, Kaplan learned the JCC had selected the film for its prestigious festival. Bringing the three organizations together made sense to Kaplan, who previously produced several Reel Stuff aviation film events at the museum. Meetings soon resulted in a partnership between the JCC’s Film Festival and Reel Stuff, utilizing the museum’s state-of-the-art giant screen theatre as a spectacular and relevant venue. “I hope that patrons will be compelled to return to the Air Force Museum to view many of the very same aircraft that are seen in the film,” said Kaplan.

The Thursday, April 30 screening of “Above and Beyond” at the Air Force Museum Theatre begins at 7 PM. Patrons can purchase single tickets for $9 and student tickets for $8 at the theatre box office the night of the show.
